How Domino Works

Domino is a game of matching end-to-end dominoes, with each tile bearing an arrangement of dots on one side and a blank or identically-patterned side. These dots, called pips, are similar to the spots on dice. The pips are separated by spaces that create an area for scoring.

A domino’s value is determined by the number of pips it has on its exposed sides, as well as its overall length. For example, a double-blank domino is considered to be worth zero points. The player who amasses the most points in a set of rounds is declared the winner.

During gameplay, each player draws a domino from the boneyard. The first player, either by drawing lots or determining who holds the heaviest domino, places the first piece onto the table. Once a domino has been placed, it cannot be moved until all other players have played their tiles.

This process continues until all of the players have placed all of their dominoes or none of them can play any more. During this time, each player can see all of the other players’ tiles.

Once a domino is placed, it begins to gather energy. According to physicist Stephen Morris, “standing an upright domino against the force of gravity gives it potential energy—that is, stored energy based on its position.” As soon as another domino is placed on top of it, that domino’s potential energy is converted into kinetic energy—that is, the energy of motion. That energy then triggers the chain reaction that brings all of the dominoes down.

When playing domino, each player aims to score by laying the dominoes on a table in such a way that both ends of the dominoes match. Then, if the dominoes have a total of any multiple of five (i.e., two’s touch one’s or sixes touch two’s), the player earns that many points.

While this sounds simple enough, the complexities of this process are what make the game so fun and challenging. The key to success in domino is picking the right tasks, or “dominoes,” to work on. These should be tasks that will have a positive impact on the rest of the task at hand.

While this may seem like a common sense strategy, it can be hard to do in the real world, where it’s easy to get distracted and lose sight of your goals. That’s why it’s important to find a tool that allows you to easily prioritize your tasks, organize them into manageable chunks, and track your progress on each one. Domino is a powerful tool that allows you to scale how you manage projects and improve collaboration. It’s available as a fully-managed cloud service or on-premises, and it’s the best choice for enterprises that want to accelerate project delivery while minimizing risk. Get started today.
